Five Places To See In Your Lifetime

If you actually stop and think about how many holidays you can fit in during a lifetime you should actually be quite picky about where you go each year. The world is a big place and there’s a lot to see and do, but where are the must-visit locations you really need to experience before you can holiday no more?

The last standing structure of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid of Giza, is a must see for anyone interested in world history and one of the most fascinating ancient cultures to have graced our world. Situated on the west bank of the River Nile and a short trip from Cairo, Giza holds some of the world’s most impressive monuments, including the Great Sphinx. Why not tie in your trip to the pyramids with a luxury cruise down the Nile or a once-in-a-lifetime diving experience in the Red Sea? As well as its glorious beaches, the Red Sea has some of the best scuba diving in the world.

Next we go from a manmade wonder to a natural wonder – the Grand Canyon in the state of Arizona, USA. Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is one of the few locations in the world to truly merit the phrase “takes your breath away”. The sheer scale of the canyon (more than 200 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and at least a mile deep), is enough to leave you short of breath. If your budget allows for it, you should really take a helicopter ride through the canyon and to its floor where you can get up close and personal with more than two billion years of the Earth’s geological history.

There are many different kinds of nature holiday, but for something very special you need to visit the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. Be ready to work for your experience as this is not like a typical safari trip where you get driven around in a 4×4. To see these incredibly special and rare animals in their natural habitat you will need to trek for hours through the Volcano National Park in a small group with a guide. Visitors are only allowed one hour each day with the gorillas, but that hour is worth every second of the long journey through the jungles of Rwanda.

Another historical must see is the “Lost City of the Incas” – Machu Picchu in Peru. Located in beneath the peak of Huayna Picchu, this remarkable site was unknown by the international community until 1911 when it was rediscovered by the American explorer Hiram Bingham. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu was built around AD 1450 and abandoned 100 years later during the time of the Spanish conquistadors. Its setting is something very special and with a forest of clouds surrounding the peak, it has a magical feeling.

For the ultimate luxury holiday experience, everyone should visit the Maldives once in their lifetime. This collection of atolls in the Indian Ocean has built a thriving tourist industry based on top-end luxury holidays. It’s not cheap, but it is opulent and has some of the most beautiful islands and resorts in the world. Maldives holidays will give you an experience that you’ll never forget, as you laze on the balcony of a water villa with crystal clear ocean as far as the eye can see.
